John Cherry University of Waterloo Keynote Lecture “Groundwater is the Key to a Sustainable Earth”

Happy New Year From The Groundwater Project!

The Groundwater Project is ringing in the New Year with an exciting and innovative in person lecture presented by distinguished University of Waterloo Professor Emeritus, and leader of our project, John Cherry. This lecture is presented in collaboration with The University of Waterloo Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and The Water Institute at the University of Waterloo. Entitled “Groundwater is the Key to a Sustainable Earth”, this opening lecture is part of a lecture series hosted by The Water Institute called “WaterTalks”, which invites leading national and international researchers to present inspiring dialogue and broadening perspectives on current water issues. In this hour-long in person talk Dr. Cherry aims to discuss global groundwater issues, as well as The Groundwater Project’s relevance towards these issues.

See the lecture abstract below:
“The concurrent deterioration of freshwater, soil, forests and oceans, compounded by climate effects, has put Earth on a perilous trajectory. There are many factors behind today’s environmental crisis, including rising greenhouse gas emissions, but freshwater—and therefore groundwater—is most fundamental and urgent because it is the most basic requirement for humans, along with food. Unfortunately, there is little public or political awareness of groundwater and the capacity of the expert groundwater community in most countries to solve groundwater problems is limited. The Groundwater Project (gw-project.org) is an innovation aimed at increasing awareness and providing a framework for capacity building and problem solving, but many other innovations are urgently needed to reverse the trajectory.”

Although global groundwater issues are a multifaceted problem humanity faces, one of the key items that is required to be addressed is the lack of “democratization” of groundwater knowledge. The Groundwater Project aims to be an innovative humanitarian effort to address this lack of equitable access to groundwater knowledge. Along with this, John Cherry will discuss other capacity building frameworks and pathways surrounding the challenges we collectively face with today’s environmental crisis.
